    The three things every authority checks

    Regardless of profession or country, every GCC regulator assesses the same three pillars: your qualification, from an institution it recognises; your registration, meaning a current home-country licence and a certificate of good standing; and your experience, measured in post-qualification years and evidenced by dated letters. Miss any one and the file stalls, however strong the other two are. Which regulator judges you depends on where you apply — if that is still open, compare licensing by country first.     Why your classification matters more than eligibility alone

    The title you are granted is not just a label. It determines which exam you sit, which facilities can employ you, and which salary band you fall into. Applying as a specialist without the postgraduate evidence to support it does not usually get you rejected outright — it gets you downgraded, and unwinding that later is considerably harder than getting it right the first time. For physicians the tiers run General Practitioner, Specialist and Consultant; nursing and allied health use their own graded structures, and SCFHS classifies into technician, technologist, specialist and senior specialist bands.

    • General Practitioner: recognised MBBS/MD, internship, around two years post-internship
    • Specialist: a postgraduate qualification plus roughly three years in the specialty
    • Consultant: board certification or recognised fellowship with five or more years
    • Nursing and allied health: graded by qualification level and specialty experience

    If your university is not on the recognised list

    This worries applicants more than it should. Most authorities recognise institutions listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools alongside their own approved lists, and an unlisted school triggers extra scrutiny or a request for equivalency evidence rather than an automatic refusal. Practical options include supplying syllabus and accreditation letters, providing additional experience evidence, or targeting a different GCC authority whose recognition criteria your qualification does meet — the eight regulators do not apply identical rules.

    Career gaps and how to explain them

    A gap of more than about two years usually needs explaining, typically with continuing professional development evidence, a completed course, or documented clinical work. Gaps themselves are not disqualifying — unexplained gaps are the problem, because during verification they read as time that cannot be confirmed. If you have one, gather the evidence before you apply rather than scrambling for it after a query arrives.

    • CPD certificates or completed courses covering the gap period
    • Documented locum, voluntary or part-time clinical work
    • A written explanation consistent with every other document in the file

    Sometimes, depending on the authority and profession. Several regulators accept a recognised three-year nursing diploma, occasionally with additional experience or bridging, while others strongly prefer or require a four-year bachelor's degree. For pharmacists, a diploma alone is generally not accepted for a full pharmacist licence. This is a case that genuinely needs a documented assessment before you spend anything.

    Most GCC authorities expect around two years of post-qualification experience, though it varies by profession and regulator — Kuwait typically asks for three, Oman expects more for dentists, and MOHAP offers a fresh-graduate route for BSc nurses. Specialist and consultant tiers require more again, alongside a postgraduate qualification or board certification.

    In limited cases. MOHAP in the Northern Emirates offers a fresh-graduate pathway for BSc nurses, and Qatar routes new graduates or those with under two years through an internship. Most other authority and profession combinations expect post-qualification experience, so a graduate route is the exception rather than the norm.

    Not by itself. Gaps beyond roughly two years usually need supporting evidence — CPD, a course, or documented clinical work — to explain the period. What causes problems is an unexplained gap, because verification cannot confirm time that has no record. Prepare the evidence before applying rather than after a query.

The eight GCC regulators apply different experience thresholds and recognition criteria, so a profile that falls short for one may comfortably meet another's requirements. Where an authority will not accept your qualification, the practical move is to identify one that will, licence there, and consider a transfer later once you have Gulf experience.
